NEW PRODUCT: ADVANCED GLOW SWITCH

First Shipment due about Feb 15th.

We will be receiving at the end of January the latest version of our Intelligent Glow Drivers. The manufacture calls the new unit the Advanced Glow Switch.  It basically works the same as the unit we have been selling for several years. However it has many electronic and mechanical upgrades. Go to our electronics section on the left and click on glow drivers and you will find information on our Advanced Glow Switch and a link to our detailed Handbook for the Advanced Glow Switch.

Out of  LiteFab and several colors of ColorFAB fabrics. With the down turn in the economy, I have to make certain that what I invest in inventory can be sold in a reasonable time period. The minimum order for the fabric is such that if it cannot be sold somewhat quickly, a cash flow problem is created for my business.

Our primary business is the selling of our paint products. That is going well for us. But I must keep cash to re supply the paint that has been sold.

LATEST CAD DRAWING PROJECT

Shown below is a photo of the full-scale Fury II that is the subject of my latest CAD drawing project. This is my evening relaxing therapy.

Photo of the full-scale 7/10 scale Isaac Fury II. This is very similar in outline to the Famous Hawker Fury fighter flown by the British during the late 1930's. Interesting mix of the old and the new. The powerplant is a 125 Lycoming enclosed in a Pitts type cowl. The structure is typical of today's wood homebuilt aircraft. The landing gear is typical of the later WWI aircraft, 1930 military paint job. The homebuilt is stressed for aerobatics with a plus 9 and minus 4 G loads. The original homebuilt has flown in an international aerobatic competition. This model can be a multipurpose design. It is legal for TOC and IMAC aerobatic competitions, serious national and international scale competitions, War Bird Fly-ins, and just over all fun flying.

This aircraft is a 7/10 scale version of the famous British Hawker Fury fighter that was flown in the late 1930's.  The homebuilt, Isaac's Fury II, is a somewhat simple all wood aircraft with a 21 foot wingspan. My 30% scale version will have a 75" wingspan.

My Fury is being drawn with a 3D Solid Modeling CAD format. The actual homebuilt plans are being used for the engineering data. The 3D CAD drawing is about 90% complete as of Feb 8, 2010.

Below is an illustration of what I have drawn as of February 8, 2010. Not certain what engine I am going to use. Several of the 40-45 cc engines will fit. The Saito 300 twin and some of the 50cc twins will fit too. The new Aerovate 52cc twin looks good too.

This computer generated illustrationf of our Fury II as of Feb 8, 2010. Still a few things to do yet. Fuselage, wings, and tail group are basically finished. Cabine reinforcing cables are installed. The upper and lower  wing panels are complete including the N-Struts and the landing and flying wires. To finish is the landing gear installation and redo the top fuselge sheeting and bulkheads. Estimated computer weight at this date is 17.1 pounds including a 4 pound engine. This does not include the batteries, ignition module, receiver(s) and wiring, and throttle servo installation. At this time the computer generated center of gravity is about 1/2" in fornt of the leading edge of the bottom wing which is about what it should be. Covering and paint will move the center of gravity back a little which will be just about right location for the correct center of gravity. Hopeing for 23 pounds flying weight.

Complete scale cockpit details are provided. Even a moveable control stick and rudder petals. About the only major change in the structure is the use of 1/8" LitePly for ribs. One could build up the ribs but there are a lot of them plus half ribs in front of the main spar.

This is a side view without showing the fuselage right side and top sheeting as of 2/8/10. Cockpit has working rudder petals and control stick. The 24 oz tank is visable. Battery will go infront of the instrument panel and is acceaible by remmoving the instrument panel. The elevator servos and tray are behind the seat can be taken out by removing the seat. Ignition module and its battery will be above the tank. The throttle servo will be under the tank. Access for these items is obtained by removable aluminum sheet panels which can be seen in the previous illustration. There are hatches in the bottom of the fuselage for the rudder servo and access to the linkage to the elevator servo trim bar. The two elevator servos drive a trim bar for reduncey reasons. If one elevator servo should fail, the other servo is not affected and will operate normaly, but with only half of the travel for the elevator linkage. A Fuji 43 engine is shown. It ans several other similiar sizes can be enclosed in the cowl. The Aerovate 50cc twin might be an excellent choice.

Here is another illustration showing the tail  group assembly. The stabilizer is attched with four brackets attached to the fuselage with 2-56 screws. Small aluminum brackets acting as washers are on the top surface. Fin is also bolted on. Still more minor details to draw in on the fin and rudder. Note that both the rudder and elevators have scale pull-pull cable control systems. Scale tail skid pivots with a spring shock absorber.. Have an idea to be able to install a optional bolt on steerable tail wheel assembly onto the skid assembly. Most of the Fury II's have tail wheels. My subject aircraft did have one when first built, but was later removed. The owner changed to the tail skid because he said, "real airplanes only have two wheels"!! This aircraft does have disc brakes on the main wheels.

Below is work in progress of the upper right wing panel. Shown is the bottom view. Ailerons are located  only in the top wing. An .016 aluminum hatch cover for the aileron servo is used to obtain access to the JR8411 servo that is side mounted on a aluminum angle servo tray.

When I get the time, there will be a separate section for the Fury with more details.

I plan to offer plans, on-line instruction, and laser cut wing ribs.

WE HAVE BEEN OPERATING AT OUR NEW LOCATION FOR A SEVERAL MONTHS NOW. PHONE NUMBER HAS CHANGED TO: 817-431-1038.  THE 877-263-5766 AND THE FAX NUMBER ARE NO LONGER IN SERVICE.

It may be difficult at times to reach me by phone as I am not always in my office for various reasons or processing and filling orders. Email is the best way to reach me. Of course email is a 24/7 operation.

I only take phone calls that have a caller's ID or listed as a private number. Unlisted or unknown callers are not taken. I do not have the caller able to leave a recorded message. The caller is instructed to leave an email (nelsonhobby@prodigy.net) along with the basic reason for the call. I will then either send back an email of call back if the phone number is given. For technical assistance, I would rather call the person back instead of writing an email.

Suggest that all orders be placed with our secured shopping cart or by email. For security reasons, I recommend that emails do not have credit card information given. I will call the sender for their credit card information.  Our shopping cart is a secured system that protects the customer credit card properly.

We also have a new credit card processor that has the latest in security.

Thanks for looking at our product line. Look forward to your orders. Please email if you have any questions.

INTRODUCTION

June 1, 2009

Thanks  for looking at our web site.

Today's economic conditions that effect most of us, are creating hardships that have not been planned on. In 2008, the operating of my small hobby business has been very challenging. Hobby dealer sales have dropped significantly and many have gone out of business. The sale of ARF kits has reduced the sales of model building products for me as well as many other suppliers

The stress of the day to day operations has been very difficult to cope with.  I just don't seem to have the energy that I use to have. Making a few too many errors in the processing of orders. However I am doing the best that I can under the conditions that I have to deal with.

I am planning on some organization changes to simplify and reduce the cost of running my business. I have moved into to a smaller nearby facility. Some of my product lines will be eliminated or reduced in inventory items.

My primary marketing efforts will be directed to our paint and epoxy products. Paint sales have been growing, even in today's times. Have made some marketing changes in our paint products. Colors will be sold in 1/2 pint containers. White and clears will be available in both 1/2 pint and  pint containers. We will also have quart size containers for all our paint products. There are cost savings with the quart sizes. The number of stock War Bird (WW  II) colors has been  cut down to about 40 colors. Will still be able to all the US military colors (FS) as well as the ICS Comerica colors.

The balance of our product line will include LiteFAB covering materials, Intelligent Glow Drivers, Prospark Ignition systems, and our miniature piano hinges.

Sometime in later 2009 I hope to introduce some balsa wood short kits. Plans will be available and laser cut parts. Cowls, canopies, and custom landing gears as required will also be made available.  In the works is my CX4 project and an old timer 1950 R/C rudder only, Trixter Beam, for electric power.

On a personal level, I should have some spare time for designing and building airplanes, and writing magazine articles. I hope to do more of my "In My Workshop" articles for FlyRC magazine. I also want  to work on my Great Lakes and Aeronca scale projects. Uncertain that I will offer kits for them, but I want to build at least one of them for personal pleasure and would like to compete in scale contests with them.  Probably will offer plans only for the experienced modelers.

I am behind on the processing on many of my orders. Being a modeler myself, I realize how important it is to receive orders on a timely basis. I have a very important business policy of not charging credit cards until the item is shipped.  I appreciate your patience with orders that have not been shipped. Be assured that your credit card will not be processed until your order is shipped.

PROSPARK IGNITION SYSTEMS

Prospark spark conversion units are now available again from us. Having trouble getting nitro fuel? Cost of nitro fuels is going up. $20/gallon for 15% nitro is common. How about converting your larger two and four stroke glow engines to run on gasoline or no nitro fuel (FAI fuel)?

More Prospark information on our web site under "Products from other companies" at the bottom of the column on the left. A new version of our Prospark web site is under construction.

THATCHER CX4

New project in the works. A 30% scale all balsa model of a great looking home built aircraft, the Thatcher CX4. For more information click on "CX4 Home Built" in the new products section on the top left.

The full-scale CX4 is an all aluminum home built. It has a 24 foot wingspan and is powered with a VW aircraft engine. A complete kit is available for about $16,000 (with engine). Several are now flying and hundreds are being built around the world.

TRIXTER BEAM PROJECT

The Beam is a 1950 rudder only kit that was produced by Guillow. It was one of the first popular R/C kits. This was during the time that only single channel radio equipment was produced.  The plans show a Citizenship 465 MHz single channel receiver with a Bonner rubber powered escapement for rudder control. One control signal closed a relay in the receiver and gave, for example, right rudder. When the signal was released the rudder went to neutral. Next time the signal was given, you got left rudder, and so on. Very primitive, but one could actually control this type of model with some degree of precision.

Illustration shows my CAD computer illustration of the 1950 Beam that was designed by Lou Andrews (designer of the AeroMaster biplane). My Beam has been modified to an electric powered aircraft. The 48" wingspan model will be powered with an Astro 02 or a MPI out runner motor. Estimated weight is 40-42 ounces. LitePoly or Nicad batteries can be used.

I have had an original Beam kit for many years. Price on the kit shows $7.50. Even the tube of Ambroid glue is still good. With the growing interest in Vintage R/C models, I thought it might be a good idea to re engineer the Beam into an electric powered model. The outline of my Beam is the same as the original. The drawing as of 2/6/09 is still work in process, but almost done. Just a few odds and ends to do.

Shown is the interior construction of my Beam. The battery is inserted through the fire wall and rests on a Liteply floor. Space is provided for a range of batteries. As with the original, the nose gear is not steerable. A modern aluminum landing gear is used instead of a 3/32 piano wire gear. Structure is mostly balsa with some Liteply ply bulkheads.

I will be offering plans and instructions. Also will offer a short kit for the laser cut parts. Prices are not established as of this time.

By the way, the Beam was the basis of Howard Bonner's Smog Hog and Fred Dunn's Astro Hog. The Smog Hog was somewhat an enlarged Beam and the Astro Hog was a low wing version of the Smog Hog. These two aircraft were very successful aerobatic models that were flown with 8 channel reed radio systems.

A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

I am seriously interested in selling my company, NELSON Hobby Specialties, a division of NELSON Aircraft Company. I will keep my NELSON Aircraft Company as an active corporation. A new company name will be used to sell giant steel tube/fabric covered aircraft scale kits that are built just like the real aircraft. The purchase offer can be made immediately.

Primary reason for the selling of NELSON Hobby Specialties is to enable for me to devote all my efforts and resources to the future design and production of giant scale R/C kits. In particular my first kits will be an Aeronca 7AC Champion  and a Great Lakes Biplane. They are described elsewhere in my web site.

I will be available for product development, marketing, and providing assistance to the purchaser for products directly related to the current product lines upon agreed terms and conditions.

Our web site and shopping cart ordering system will be sold as part of the sale.

Purchase terms and conditions are negotiable.

Please contact me by phone if  you, or know of someone who would be interested in taking over the ownership of NELSON Hobby Specialties.

Comments on selling Nelson Hobby by Jerry Nelson, owner: Recently I have been offering our marketing name, NelsonHobby Specialties, and our product line for purchase. Price is negotiable and is attractively priced. There has been several individuals who have asked for additional information. Two were very seriously interested and one of those visited me at our location. Although the interest was there, no final purchase agreement has been made. Nelson Hobby is still available for purchase.

I think the ideal buyer is someone who has been interested in getting into the R/C Hobby industry.  The buyer perhaps would be in a personal change of life situation, does not like his/her current occupation or the management where he/she is employed, perhaps the business is having hard times and is downsizing, going out of business, or will be in a short period of time. Another possibility is someone who is looking for a business opportunity for the son or daughter. That buyer is or has been involved in the hobby and has knowledge of the industry.

The advantage of purchasing Nelson Hobby is to have immediate name and product recognition both in the USA and to a certain extent in the international market. In particular our Nelson Hobby Paint. A potential buyer should consider the cost of getting an unknown business and business owner recognized into the hobby market. The name recognition is very important in the hobby industry and getting that name recognition can be time consuming and as a result, very expensive.

...............................................................

I recently visited my long time friend, Joe Martin in Oceanside, California. Joe is the owner of Sherline Products, a manufacture of miniature lathes and mills. A very successful business employing over 40 people. Purpose of the visit was to be part of the opening of a museum he has recently established featuring outstanding miniature projects that individuals have built.

Joe has set up a foundation called the Joe Martin Foundation for Exceptional Craftsmanship. There are two sections of the foundation, an on-line museum and a very professional, open to the public, museum located in his factory.

The purpose of the foundation is to recognize individuals who have created outstanding projects made mostly from metal. Some examples are miniature steam engines, clocks, small scale versions of metal working machines, and scale model aircraft.

For more information on the foundation see www.CraftsmanshipMuseum.com.  And if you are in the Oceanside area (phone is 760-727-5857) stop by for a visit.

Shown are some photos that I took that highlight some examples of the projects on display.

INTRODUCTION BY:

Jerry Nelson

I have been in the model industry for over 40 years in the roll of a distributor, manufacture, retailer, consultant, designer, importer and magazine writer. Over the years I have designed and published plans for over 50 different R/C model aircraft from 1/2A R/C’s, AMA/FAI pattern aircraft, pylon racers, sailplanes, standoff scale, and several giant scale projects.

Jerry Nelson, president of NELSON Hobby Specialties, with his first original all aluminum AL-1. First fully aerobatic all aluminum R/C aircraft. Wing tips, cowl, and wheel pants are from fiberglass. 100" wingspan, Saito 270/300, 32 pounds, Airtronics Vision radio. Three aircraft were built.

I earned a bachelor of science degree in aviation maintenance engineering from San Jose State University in California. Have a private pilot’s license with an instrument and glider rating and have a total flying time in excess of 800 hours. In addition I have an Airframe and Power plant license.

)ver 30 years ago, I produced the first all fiberglass R/C model, a 12 ft. span KA6E sailplane. Sold for $175. Made over 50 of them.

Numerous articles on R/C topics have been published in national and international R/C magazines. Many of my more popular R/C aircraft designs were offered as construction articles.

Have attended hundreds of local, national, and international competitions including being a member of the winning R/C FAI aerobatics team in 1963 and team manager of the winning team in 1965.

Over 30 years ago, with the assistance of friends in California, I started the Formula 1, 40 size, pylon racing event and the NMPRA organization. The NMPRA is still active today.

When I moved to the Chicago area about 25 years ago, I started IMAC, the scale aerobatic turn around pattern event. This event has become very popular throughout the USA and internationally.

I assisted the Circus Circus Hotel in establishing the Tournament of Champions event by writing the model competition rules for the turn around aerobatic maneuvers and the later large scale aircraft requirements. I was contest director for the first six TOC events.

I am very proud to say, because of my past activities in R/C modeling, in 1998 I was elected to the AMA Hall of Fame.

In 1998 I sold my aircraft oxygen business that I operated for over 15 years. Many of my former oxygen customers are modelers. Today, all of my business efforts are focused on the hobby industry.

Currently do articles for Fly RC magazine. In addition to my "In My Workshop" column, I do product reviews and other specialized articles for the magazine.

Several model aircraft designs are "in the works". Hope to have short kits and plans for several different aircraft.

I attend many modeling events as an exhibitor, contestant, or as a magazine reporter. I am constantly looking for new ideas and products. This is how I determine the type or mix of products offered to my customers. This catalog material shown in the following pages reflects the nature of the hobby products offered.
